Natural Mouthwash
Kawa drinkers inevitably get coffee breath. But don’t let that shy you away from your mornin’ cuppa! Rinse out that dragon’s breath with some mouthwash – but wait… not that questionable blue liquid hiding under the sink. I’m not talking about your drain cleaner… but I might as well be.
What’s in commercial store-bought mouthwash?
- triclosan (hormone disruptor, carcinogen)
- parabens (hormone disruptors)
- colourful dyes (the blue/green/yellow/red #) made from petroleum
Essentially a mix of chemicals and some colouring that makes your mouth sting like a thousand wasps attacked. So try a mouthwash that is actually GOOD for your teeth, gums, and mouth.
How to make Natural Mouthwash
Choose a bottle that will hold your mouthwash (preferably glass since we will be adding essential oils).
Add 1 teaspoon of sea salt or Himalayan pink salt to the bottle. Salt reduces bacteria and helps to heal mouth sores and infections. The salt will also help to blend the essential oils into the water.
Add 30 drops of essential oils in total. Essential oils for oral health include:
- Peppermint EO (Young Living or Plant Therapy) *Do not use for children age 2-15 or pregnant/nursing mamas*
- Thieves EO Blend (Young Living) a mix of clove, cinnamon bark, rosemary, lemon, and eucalyptus. *Do not use for children age 2-15 or pregnant/nursing mamas*
- Clove EO (Young Living or Plant Therapy) *Do not use for children age 2-15 or pregnant/nursing mamas*
- Cinnamon EO (Plant Therapy) *Do not use for children age 2-15 or pregnant/nursing mamas*
- Lemon EO (Young Living or Plant Therapy)
- Orange EO (Young Living or Plant Therapy)
- Spearmint EO (Young Living or Plant Therapy)
- Oregano EO (Young Living or Plant Therapy) I only use 1-2 drops as it is very potent. *Do not use for children age 2-15 or pregnant/nursing mamas*
{I use and recommend Young Living Essential Oils and Plant Therapy Essential Oils because they are 100% pure quality essential oils. There are other reputable essential oil companies to purchase from. Your local drug store’s cheap essential oil can give you a rash and not have the same positive effects because most only contain about 10% of the pure oil and the rest is filled with synthetics. Do your research and find a company you feel comfortable purchasing from.}
Add about 10 drops of Trace Mineral Drops. It contains over 72 trace minerals for healthy teeth, including calcium, iron, and zinc. Read more about them here. If you find it too salty, add 5 drops instead.
Finally pour in 1 cup of filtered water. Give the bottle a good mix and it is ready to use! Shake before each use.
