Himalayan Salt Lamps have been illuminating our home for many years. Yes it looks like just a lump of salt… but don’t underestimate what it can do!

What is a Himalayan Salt Lamp?

Himalayan Salt Lamps are blocks of salt which are hand carved and mined from the Himalayan Mountains in Khewra, Pakistan.

They are a pinkish orange colour because they contain many trace minerals. There are different sizes of Himalayan Salt Lamps, so to choose the size needed remember that 1 lb is recommended for about 16 square feet of space. Choose one large size or a few in smaller sizes and spread them throughout the home.

They come in many forms:

There are so many reasons to love Himalayan Salt Lamps. Keep reading to find out why I love my beautiful lump of salt!

Clean the Air

Water molecules are always circulating in the environment (carrying pollutants such as dust, pollen, smoke, mold, pet dander, viruses, bacteria, etc.). Himalayan salt lamps attract and absorb those water molecules through a process called hygroscopy. Once water molecules are absorbed, they evaporate back into the environment. Meanwhile the pollutants are deposited on the salt lamp and are no longer floating through the air.

Help with Allergies and Asthma

Himalayan salt lamps help to clear the air of known pollutants (dust, pollen, smoke, mold, pet dander, viruses, bacteria, etc.). These pollutants can be the cause of allergies and asthma in many people Hi… you know where this is going… I’m always one of those people… Personally, I found that this beautiful lump of salt was the biggest change in my allergy symptoms. There are also Himalayan salt inhalers for asthma and allergies.

Reduction of Electromagnetic Radiation and Positive Ions

Electromagnetic radiation is emitted from electronics (ex. tv, computer, phone, laptop, tablets, etc.) and can cause increased stress and fatigue, as well as lower the body’s immunity. Positive ions are found indoors (from fluorescent lights, electronics, air pollutants, etc.) and affect our physical and mental health [aka they don’t do anything positive for you… oh the irony]. Negative ions are found outdoors in nature (near water, trees, etc.) and work to boost immunity, stabilize blood pressure, and increase overall health and wellbeing. Himalayan salt lamps help to reduce some of the electromagnetic radiation and positive ions and replace them with negative ions. They reduce on a minimal level, so the best thing to do would be to literally UNPLUG, go outdoors and take in some nature.

Use as a Night Light

They let off the perfect amber glow that brings nostalgic feelings of warm campfires with hot cups of tea and gooey smores. Just me? Himalayan salt lamps are perfect to use as a night light without disrupting sleep! Different lights affect us in different ways. Artificial blue light is the emitted by electronics and some light bulbs. Before artificial light, people woke up and went to sleep according to the sunrise and sunset. Blue light can cause your body to ‘think it’s daytime’. Resulting in suppressed melatonin (sleep hormone) and disrupted circadian rhythms (your body clock). Himalayan salt lamps do not emit blue light and therefore do not disrupt circadian rhythms and sleep cycles.

Happy Salt Lamp Glowing 🙂
