Natural Flax Seed Hair Gel
Travel back to the 1950’s because it is about to get real slick in here 😉 Just kidding of course! This hair gel is not your typical D*ppidy Do. It has a good feel, flexible hold, and beneficial ingredients for your hair.
Inspired by a vegan flax egg (if you have ever made one you know exactly what I mean), I played around with a recipe for hair gel!
Commercial Hair Gels contain
Parabens (Hormone disruptors)
Fragrance (Which really is a loophole for companies to add anything…)
Formaldehyde / Formaldehyde Releasers (Super scary toxin)
Preservatives (Carcinogenic)
How to Make Natural Flax Seed Hair Gel
Boil 2 cups of water on medium heat.
Add 2 tablespoons of flax seeds to the boiling water and allow it to simmer for about 15 minutes. Stir often to prevent sticking!
Once it becomes gel-like, take it off the stove top and pour through a strainer before it cools. Use a spoon or spatula to press the mixture through the strainer and into a glass jar.
Add about 5 drops of essential oils once the gel cools and give it a good mix. Essential oils beneficial for hair include:
- Rosemary EO stimulates the scalp, promotes hair growth and helps with dry flaky scalp and dandruff. (Young Living or Plant Therapy) *Do not use for children age 2-15 or pregnant/nursing mamas.*
- Cedarwood EO nourishes the scalp and promotes hair growth. (Young Living or Plant Therapy)
- Lavender EO soothes and nourishes the scalp, and promotes hair growth. (Young Living or Plant Therapy)
- Peppermint EO stimulates the scalp and promotes hair growth. (Young Living or Plant Therapy) *Do not use for children age 2-15 or pregnant/nursing mamas.*
- Tea Tree EO helps to prevent and treat hair conditions such as dandruff, dry itchy scalp and lice. (Young Living or Plant Therapy)
- Ylang Ylang EO helps to prevent hair loss and soothes dry scalp. (Young Living or Plant Therapy) *Do not use for children age 2-15 or pregnant/nursing mamas.*
{I use and recommend Young Living Essential Oils and Plant Therapy Essential Oils because they are 100% pure quality essential oils. There are other reputable essential oil companies to purchase from. Your local drug store’s cheap essential oil can give you a rash and not have the same positive effects because most only contain about 10% of the pure oil and the rest is filled with synthetics. Do your research and find a company you feel comfortable purchasing from.}
Psst… some extra tips
This mixture should hold up for about 2-3 weeks in a cool dry place. If you live in a warm climate then keep it in the fridge because the cold also helps keep the gelly consistency. It has no preservatives, but the essential oils will increase its lifespan.
Happy Hair Gelling 🙂
